Buying movie rights

I did.....It cost me a Six Pack of beer. I bought a friend's script and they said that they didn't want to sell it to me but I had to give them something to make it legal so I put a contract in front of them and a six-pack of beer and it all became legal with their X on the dotted line. I did pay an attorney for the contract but it was simple and painless.

Nigel, would you be able to copy the contract here, as a template? Since 'Progress' asked, and no-budget filmmakers/hopefuls may not have access to an attorney, it would be quite 'guerilla' of you to post a template contract with proper legalese-grammer, so others could fill-in the blanks & have a legal document which at least one lawyer has vouched for.

Has anyone ever seriously tried to buy the rights to an unknown short story for a short film? If so: I need some input and advice.

Let me talk with my lawyer and find out if I can do this and not get my butt sued over something. Then Yeah.....Sure I don't have any problems doing so.
